watched hairspray yesterday with my army buddies: tze kent, shah rizal, shun jing and xiang long. loved the show. we all generally liked the show except for tze kent the insatiable critic... :P but yar. its a feel-good movie that's definitely worth watching. i dun mind watching it again. it got me moving in my seat. not so sure how the people around me reacted to me but i couldn't care less... ahhaha..

in short, the movie is singing after singing after singing. i mean it starts off with a song for goodness sake, then like 5 mins of dialogue/plot and suddenly they break into song again. but ah well at least the songs are cool. it also feeds off slapstick so yar...

apart from the excellent performance by the lead nikki blonsky who's absolutely comfortable in her own skin, i felt that amanda bynes was quite underrated. her singing voice in the song "you can't stop the beat" is good, but ah well. john travolta's age is showing in his singing unfortunately. it's not as smooth as it was in grease. but other than that, he's amazing as edna turnblad. it's disturbing to see him/her flirt with wilbur but yar... yar, the way john travolta moved in the final song is woah... you have got to see it.

at times the show is overtly preachy on issues like black-white segregation and stuff, but what i was impressed with were the subtle issues, like how much are you willing to sacrifice for what your dream? or for what is right? the show is just a big celebration for life, for fighting and succeeding in your dream, and that is what is so powerful about the film and especially the last song, "you cant stop the beat". the other song is "i know where i've been" which is also very emotional and powerful in its message. so yar... worth watching.
